Q-series dummies in R129: Q0, Q1, Q1.5, Q3, Q6 and Q10

R129 uses the Q family of child dummies. Here are their masses and the stature band each represents in approval testing.

R129 tests seats with the Q-series dummies described in Annex 8. They carry more instrumentation than the P-series used under R44 — including neck loads, chest deflection and abdominal pressure sensors — which is what allows the criteria on the injury criteria page.

Masses

Dummy Total mass (kg) Head + neck (kg) Torso (kg) Stature band in Table 8
Q0 3.47 ± 0.21 1.13 1.40 ≤ 60 cm
Q1 9.6 ± 0.80 2.41 4.21 60 – 75 cm
Q1.5 11.10 ± 0.80 2.80 4.74 75 – 87 cm
Q3 14.59 ± 0.70 3.17 6.00 87 – 105 cm
Q6 22.95 ± 0.80 3.94 9.07 105 – 125 cm
Q10 35.58 ± 1.39 4.21 14.28 > 125 cm

The abdominal pressure twin sensors add up to 0.2 kg to the Q1.5 and 0.5 kg to the Q3, Q6 and Q10 in frontal and rear tests (Annex 8, 4.1).

How dummies are chosen

  • Tests use the smallest and the largest dummy corresponding to the manufacturer’s declared size range (Table 8, §7.1.3.6).
  • If the seat needs substantial modification between sizes (e.g. a convertible) or the range spans more than three bands, an intermediate dummy is tested too.
  • No lateral test with Q10 is required for i-Size booster seats with an upper limit between 125 and 135 cm.
  • A non-integral seat may not be approved on Q3 results alone.
  • The overturning test uses the smallest and largest dummy with a load equal to four times the dummy mass applied in the inverted position §7.1.2.

Why it matters for product planning

Each additional dummy band adds test configurations — upright and reclined, frontal, rear and lateral, plus misuse tests. A 40–105 cm convertible therefore needs a much larger test matrix than a 100–150 cm booster. Planning the range against Table 8 early keeps approval cost and time under control.

This page summarises UN Regulation No. 129 as consolidated up to Supplement 4 to the 04 series (published in the EU Official Journal as 2026/1534). It is guidance, not legal advice: only the authentic UN/ECE texts have legal effect, and approval decisions rest with the Type Approval Authority and its Technical Service.
